The Zandkasteel project saw the transformation of a monumental building in Amsterdam into a biophilic hub of modern functionality and design. As the interior landscape architect, MOSS incorporated lush greenery and complex planting concepts, blending historical architecture with a nature-inspired approach that enhances the building’s legacy while promoting well-being.

From cozy corners for focused work to open areas for collaboration and interaction, the design supports a variety of needs. Greenery is carefully placed to enhance natural light, improve air quality, and create a calming atmosphere.

Furniture-based planters and loose pots provide a connection between nature and the built environment. Using circular design principles and biodiversity-enhancing plant selections, the project emphasizes reuse of materials and energy-efficient solutions.

Technical and Creative Highlights

  • Custom millwork integrating planters into furniture
  • Color-themed zones inspired by seasonal changes
  • Adaptive green elements that evolve with the space
  • Water-efficient irrigation systems and low-maintenance planting solutions
